Visit Winston Graham's local museum and discover the mystical Celtic history,
the culture, the people and the many beautiful areas
that inspired his memorable Poldark novels.
With the aid of a grant from the National Lottery the Museum has recently undergone a complete and much needed interior refurbishment. It is open from Easter to end October. Opening times: Weekdays 10.30-1pm & 2.00-4.30pm, Saturdays 11.00-4.30pm Please contact the Perranporth Tourist Office for all future details and latest information. Details will also be placed on the notice board outside the Museum.
Perranzabuloe Folk Museum's memorial exhibition to Winston, who remained our faithful and most generous patron to the end, is now ready and subject to space open displays of W.G. memorabilia will remain permanently on view. This will include several highly interesting and previously unseen pre-war photographs, newspaper articles as well as some early and very rare non-Poldark books. Additionally and among many other long term plans for the future is the creation of a new and exciting "Winston Graham and Poldark Trail". Currently in map form and on sale in the Museum, it clearly reveals many of the important areas and sites in the parish that moved him deeply and were depicted so imaginatively in the Poldark novels.
Whilst all further updates and details of forthcoming Museum attractions concerning Winston Graham will be announced both on here and on the main News page from time to time, please make sure you check first beforehand to avoid disappointment. And to round off your visit we of course have many other local historical artefacts, items and topics of interest on display as well. For example details of the life and works of the Irish saint St. Pirran who left Ireland in about the 6th Century and founded a local oratory, the remains of which now lie buried under the coastal sand dunes.
Finally the Museum has placed a granite seat in memory of Winston Graham on the site of "Legh Carrygy" (Cornish for Flat Rocks). Though no longer in existence, this was the name of the hillside bungalow just above the beach where he found the solitude in which to plan and write the early Poldark novels. It is intended that this seat shall remain a fitting reminder and a permanent tribute to a wonderful gentleman and highly talented author who lived and worked in Perranporth and in his beloved Cornwall for over 30 years.
Thank you Winston.
